从今天起,烟草销售商不得向18周岁以下的人出售香烟及相关的制品。
该新法律主要是为了改善年轻人的健康而制定的。公共卫生部长指出,这项新规定传达了一个明确的讯息,烟草是一个高度危险的物质,并希望防止青少年把吸烟摆在首位。
法定年龄从16周岁提高到18周岁同时让销售商能通过护照,驾驶执照和其它相关的证件比较容易的识别购买者的年龄。

The legal age for buying cigarettes rises from 16 years old to 18 years old from today.
Public Health Minister Shona Robison said:
"Today's new law raising the age of cigarette sales is a milestone in improving the health of young people. It sends out a clear message that tobacco is a highly dangerous substance and hopefully prevent young people from taking up smoking in the first place.
"Raising the age to 18 will also make it easier for shopkeepers to identify whether young people are old enough to buy cigarettes, through a passport, a driving licence or a proof-of-age card.
"As part of a wider range of measures we are taking forward including prevention education, tougher enforcement and help for young people to give up smoking, I am confident that the number of young people smoking will continue to fall."
