Dundee University Students Union (DUSA) - Guide
Mono is Dundee’s largest nightclub and is open Tuesday - Saturday during the Semester. With two distinct areas (referred to as Mono 1 and Mono 2).
Mono caters for both dance floor fanatics and those who prefer to chillout. With free admission on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and some Thursdays and drinks prices from only £1,
Mono is the cheapest, busiest and safest student nightclub in Dundee. Over the past few years Mono has hosted a wide range of headlining acts. Not only was the venue chosen to launch Radio 1’s Big Weekend in 2006, with Zane Lowe, The Kooks and the View live on national radio, it has also hosted sell-out performances from the likes of Groove Armada, Mylo, Biffy Clyro, BCM, Hed Kandi and Darren Emmerson. In fact Radio 1’s Colin Murray rates Mono as his all time favourite student venue.
But Mono is a diverse and interesting creature. More than just a nightclub, Mono has the biggest video projection screen in Dundee and is a great place to watch sport.
During Semester 2 and the Summer Vacation Mono 2 opens during the day when we turn Airlie Terrace into a pavement café, so all you art students will finally have a place to break in your new beret.
Level 2 is situated on ground level and serves as the Union’s main entrance and reception. At Reception we look after everything from general enquiries, lost property, first aid, ticket sales, signing-in to the cloakroom. If you require any information, assistance or have a problem – come to the Reception and we’ll endeavour to get you sorted.
The Premier Store is the Union’s convenience store/mini supermarket. Specialising in everything you need to keep you going (i.e. fags, booze and frozen pizzas; not to forget Alka Seltzers, toothpaste and bog roll; we all need balance in our lives) the Premier Store will save you from having to make the tiresome trek into the city centre.
Catering for your everyday requirements from the time you arrive on Campus, to the time you leave, the Premier Store provides everything from: your breakfast just before your lecture; to a carry-out and a microwave meal to take home for tea. With discounted offers throughout the year, as with the rest of the Union, the Premier Store is one of the cheapest places to shop. If you’re lucky enough to be living in halls the Premier Store is your nearest shop for booze.
The larger of the Union’s two bars, The Liar is named after the novel by our beloved former Rector, Stephen Fry. Duplicitous and deceitful, the Liar offers the agonising choice of four distinct areas all served by one of the longest bars in Dundee and a plethora of plasma screens and video projectors. Whether it be the comfortable and bijou lounge with its leather sofas and low lighting; the sun-drenched, double height, window-side with private booths large enough to seat you and all your new friends; the busy bar area with standing room only; or the raised seating booths – we guarantee that you will find an area to suit your taste.
But more importantly the Liar is the cheapest bar in Dundee - for both food and drink. Shots of spirits, alco-pops and bottled beers can be bought for as little as £1. As well as being the Union’s busiest bar at night, the Liar is always packed at lunchtime when we serve a selection of baked potatoes with fillings, homemade soup and panini. In the afternoon you can find students relaxing with a coffee that more often or not turns into a cheeky afternoon pint; that will turn into an insolent teatime pint and likely as not, a thoroughly debauched all-nighter.
As we all know, you should never drink on an empty stomach and so in the evening the Liar serves pizza which is perfect for either sharing with your mates or scoffing all yourself. The Liar is also THE venue to watch televised sport in Dundee – no other pub has more plasma or video screens. In general if sport is on terrestrial/ satellite TV and you want to watch it – it will be on in the Liar. (Please bear in mind that we will not be showing those ‘specialist’ channels that you are not allowed to watch at home).
The Union’s cafe bar, Air is so named because is has floor to ceiling windows giving you the impression of being outside whilst sitting inside. Air provides a higher standard of product and service than available in the Liar, however this doesn’t mean that Air is still not great value.
Air operates as a café bar during the day, serving a selection of speciality coffees and the best value pub grub and snacks in Dundee Air’s legendary cocktails are perfect for a post lecture wind-down or for kick-starting that all night session. Air is also the only bar in the Union to have a wine list – buy two large glasses and we’ll give you the rest of the bottle free.
Air offers some great free entertainment during the week playing host to Karaoke / Sing Star nights on Tuesdays and the Live Lounge open mic nights every second Monday. At the weekend Air becomes an intimate pre–club bar featuring local guest DJ’s playing the very best in bar soundtracks. All events are free and start at 9pm. Air also features a five metre wide video projection screen and sometimes shows major televised sporting events.
The Union’s second nightclub, Floor 5 is situated at the top of the Union on (surprisingly) Level 5. With a glazed balcony Floor 5 offers panoramic views of the Tay estuary, as well as enabling you to check out the talent in the Liar below.
With a smaller capacity than Mono, Floor 5 hosts more eclectic and specialist club nights, catering for those who prefer their music to be more credible than commercial – more Klaxons than Kelly Clarkson. However on Saturday a sense of irony prevails with the Union’s very popular 80’s and 90’s club night – Spice Up Your Life.
Admission to Floor 5 is free on Wednesdays and on Saturday nights a combined ticket allows both admission into Mono and Floor 5, giving you a choice of two different nightclubs for the price of one.
Floor 5 is also available for private hire – please contact Reception for details.
